Are you clear about the preferred talents, values and work settings that are most important to your career satisfaction?
Career Tip #1: Be true to yourself.
Career satisfaction is intimately tied to your talents, values and work environment. Regardless of the dramatic changes occurring in the workplace, a strong sense of yourself will be the foundation that will provide confidence, comfort and stability. Through your own efforts or with the guidance of a professional career counselor, identify the talents you would like to apply, the values to which you are most committed and the work environment that you would prefer. Clarifying these measures will allow you to assess current circumstances and act on future opportunities.

If opportunity knocks, are you prepared with a current version of a results-oriented résumé?
Career Tip #2: Revive your résumé.
If you think a résumé is only necessary when you’re in a job search, think again. Your résumé is a practical tool, useful in a variety of situations, to introduce your skills and experience to others. Always keep your résumé up-to-date, with a focus on results achieved. The ongoing process of organizing your thoughts about who you are and what you have to offer will prove useful not only for applying for new positions but for your overall career management.
Our career counselors can help you construct a concise, effective résumé:

Do you have an extensive network of contacts, with resource and support people, both inside and outside of your organization?
Career Tip #3: Nurture your network.
To avoid isolation that could sabotage your employability, seek opportunities to connect with others informally and formally (social networking sites, professional associations, cross-functional teams, conferences). Networking skills are essential for building career-critical relationships. Be sure that you keep the relationships a two-way street by also giving back to your contacts.

In the past six months, have you read at least one business book, attended a professional seminar or developed a new skill?
Career Tip #4: Make your development a priority.
You must continually learn in order to keep pace with change and advance your potential. In addition to employer-sponsored learning opportunities, take responsibility for your own development. Outline a development plan including the skills and knowledge you would like to attain, the opportunities you will pursue, the timeline for achievement, and the personal investment you will make to reach your development goals

Can you effectively communicate your career goals and professional strengths?
Career Tip #5: Polish your presentation.
Keep in mind that it’s not always the most qualified person who wins the job offer or gets the promotion. It’s often the person who most effectively communicates, “I’m the best person to meet your needs.” Your ability to listen to, understand and address employers’ and clients’ issues is the basis for strong communication. If you can articulate your goals, concisely present your message in writing and in person, and convey confidence in your delivery, your reputation will be immeasurably enhanced.
