Talent Management
TO MAINTAIN A DIVERSE WORK FORCE, SHOW COMMITMENT TO EMPLOYEES

One of my goals as a new manager is to build a more diverse workforce. What suggestions do you have for me (and for my company) to attract and keep the best candidates of diverse backgrounds?

Deb's Answer:

Start with the universal draws. There are certain core elements of an engaging work environment that are attractive to just about everyone. These core elements include qualities like:

open communication in which employees’ opinions are voiced and valued,

clear and fair expectations about on-the-job deliverables,

a competitive salary and benefits package,

an opportunity for flexible scheduling, and

recognition for a job well done.

These may seem like common sense desirable conditions. In reality, they’re easy to pay lip service to but require a genuine commitment to deliver the goods.

Evidence that your company is committed to diversity is another criterion to display in attracting candidates. A diverse representation in the management ranks of the organization, the existence of affinity groups (e.g. Black Professionals Forum, Women’s Network, Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Affinity Group), a career development/mentoring program and a cafeteria that serves ethnic food represent examples of the many ways of demonstrating organizational commitment. These types of initiatives signal to job candidates, as well as current employees, that you and your company are walking the talk. Along with visible signs of diversity, incorporate a range of backgrounds and work styles in your employee base to foster new ideas and innovation.

Getting the word out is the next order of business. A variety of promotional efforts can be employed to attract a more diverse pool of candidates. Use all of the organization’s communication vehicles—corporate website, company literature, core values statement-- to send a consistent message about valuing diversity. You could also recruit on campuses with a diverse student population and advertise through websites and publications that speak to the audiences you’re trying to reach.

A combination of these efforts will enhance your reputation, strengthen recruitment and contribute to the retention of existing talent.
